The Glenkens Community and Arts Trust is delighted to announce the nomination of the CatStrand for Venue of the Year at the prestigious Scots Trad Music Awards.

A groundbreaking Guide intended to improve the process of engagement with local people and communities in new woodland creation projects in Scotland has been launched.

Application Forms for Grants are now available from the Charity Shop in Dalry. 

There was a good turnout for Carsphairn SWI meeting held on Thursday 17th October in Lagwyne Hall, Carsphairn.

Corsock and Kirkpatrick Durham Community Council have received this year’s Blackcraig Windfarm Micro-grant funding and are now welcoming applications from within the Community Council area. 

The Galloway Glens Scheme is opening a scheme of small maintenance grants to ensure that legacy Galloway Glens-funded projects can continue to deliver great outcomes for the communities they serve.

September 19th saw members of Carsphairn SWI get together for their first meeting after the summer break. There was lots to catch up on and discuss.

Hyper-local online community news collaborative The Scottish Beacon - of which the Glenkens Gazette is a member - believes in the power of community-driven solutions and aims to amplify these stories to show that a greener, fairer Scotland is possible – and already taking shape.

Carsphairn held their annual community market on Saturday 7th in Lagwyne Hall, as part of the Glenkens Food month, which runs throughout the month of September.

The Dalry Local Place Plan has been drawn up on behalf of Dalry Community Council, and aims to articulate the community's wishes for future development of the settlement and wider area, including the retention and improvement of existing facilities, housing and services, and views on land use. Closing date: 30th September.

Saturday 24th August was The Great Corsock Show, with exhibitors and visitors coming from far and wide to attend a vital feature in the Stewartry’s event calendar.

The Carsphairn children’s group, Bairn Banter have had a very productive and hands on learning experience focusing on producing their own food for free.

The Great Corsock Show is coming! On Saturday, 24th of August, this much-loved Stewartry tradition will allow the great and the good of home baking, crafting, scarecrow fashioning, vegetable growing and homemade drink brewing to cheerily pit their skills against each other.

There is only one apple that is considered ‘native’ to the UK, the Crab Apple (Malus Sylvestris). The Crab Apple’s tendency to hybridise with other, non-native varieties means native, ‘wild’ trees are rare. Previous work has identified that Galloway hosts a major proportion of the UK’s wild Crab Apple Trees.

In August Dumfries & Galloway Climate Hub will put on 2 free workshops called Letter Writing for Political Engagement, facilitated by author and environmental scientist Sandy Winterbottom who represents paperboats.org, a Scotland-based collective of writers focussed on nature and environment in a time of climate and ecological breakdown.

Dalry Community Council are very pleased to announce the news of an additional defibrillator to the village.

Dumfries & Galloway hosts a significant proportion of the United Kingdom’s commercial woodland creation schemes. With discussion ongoing on the national stage regarding land use change, the ‘Woodlands Plus’ project aims to add local value - employment, biodiversity or public access - to three forestry sites in the region.

The Glenkens Community and Arts Trust (GCAT) hosted an Education and Learning event in the Glenkens last week (July 11th), on behalf of the Glenkens and District Community Action Plan Steering Group. The event was set in the context of the Community Action Plan goal that the Glenkens will be a connected, resilient and carbon neutral place, where people will want to live, work and bring up their families.
