Planning the future of Parton Kirk
Most people are aware that the Church of Scotland is in full retreat, and that large numbers of churches are being closed and put on the open market. This leaves small communities, particularly with the prospect of former Kirk buildings that have for centuries been part of the fabric of life, either being sold and converted to other uses, or failing to sell and falling into disrepair.
For each community this creates possibly a sense of loss, but also- depending on circumstances -an opportunity for renewal.
In Parton, some residents have been anticipating this day for nearly 20 years, and the community council have commissioned studies into alternative uses for the building that could retain it as a community asset and resilience centre, while providing a regional asset to celebrate and promote the work of the world-famous scientist who is buried there- James Clerk Maxwell, (that’s the bit that could pay the bills)!
The community council have now called a public meeting on 28th August to gauge public support for these plans (see more on Facebook).

July 2026 - DM Hall values Parton Kirk at ÂŁ50,000
May 2026 - The Church of Scotland offers Parton Community exclusive rights to buy the Kirk at market value until 1st November.
April 2026 - Sale of Kirk discussed at Community Council meeting. The Church of Scotland approached to express interest in the building's future.
March 2026 - Presbytery approves sale of Parton and Crossmichael Churches.
March 2023 - Feasibility reports into use of kirk as JCM science and community centre.
June 2022 - Church Board decide not to hold regular services in Parton Kirk.
May 2017 - ARPL update 2010 report on future uses of Kirk.
Sept 2010 - Public meetings to decide future options for the Kirk
Summer 2010 - Lottery funding for ARPL to study options for alternative uses of Kirk, condition, repair and conversion costs.
June and Sept 2008 - Public meetings to discuss the future of the Kirk.
