Glenkens Community Shop Needs You!

Glenkens Community Shop

The Glenkens Community Shop opened nearly eleven years ago, and is flourishing. So much so that we need a few more volunteers – it would be nice if there were some male volunteers on hand when the men come into the shop each day we’re open too. Over this time the Community Shop has given out nearly £70,000, helping to support many groups and individuals who play such a vital role in our Glenkens community - see our latest round of grants below.

The shop has become a victim of its own success and as such we are looking for some help.. Although we have a sizeable team of volunteers, we still need some shifts covered. From Wednesday 1st March 2023 shop opening times will be Monday 10am-1pm, Tuesday 10am-1pm, Wed 10am-4pm, Thurs 10am-1pm, Fri 10am-4pm, Sat 10 am- 1pm (with option for Saturday 1pm-4pm if we can get cover). We can only open, with anything approaching our pre Covid availability, with more volunteers and even if you can offer one 3 hrs session a month that would be really helpful. We’re an exceptionally friendly group.

We welcome volunteers of all ages, and from everywhere in the Glenkens as the grants are open to all villages within the Glenkens. We may be able to provide valuable practical experience for school leavers and provide references where required. Shifts are 3 hours long, and usually involve biscuits. New volunteers are always on with experienced people, and we usually have at least two people on at any one time.

If you’re interested just pop into the shop for a chat with current volunteers and pick up an application form. Or you can phone 07904 678599 to find out more or to leave an email address and we will email an application form to you. We all really enjoy our time in the shop – it’s a great way to meet others, serve the community while getting to know people and listen to their chat and also support some of the incredibly varied groups and projects in the Glenkens.

At our funding allocation meeting on the 29th of November 2022, we were able to disburse funding totalling £6,905 to the following individual and group applicants:

  • Sean Campion

  • Balmaclellan Village Hall Trust

  • New Galloway Junior Golf Club

The closing date for this is 31st May 2023 and application forms will be available in the shop or available by phoning 07904 678599 Grants are for sums of up to £500. Applicants should be either interest groups based in the Glenkens, or individuals with projects which will benefit the Glenkens community. As you can see from the list, these are many and varied!
