Polmaddy

  • Polmaddy was a ferm-toun or farming village, with records dating back to 1505. It is possible contemporary with Kars Castle. Forestry and Land Scotland (formerly Forestry Commission) acquired the land in 1971 and have preserved the remains of the site for visitors.

The community was probably made up of tenant farmers who were thirled, meaning legally bound, to have their grain ground into meal at the local mill. They had to pay a portion of the grain for the privilege.

Changes in farming during the 18th and 19th centuries led to the abandonment of many such small farm villages in this area and by the 1853, the 1st edition Ordnance Survey 6-inch map records Polmaddy as in ruins.
