The Glenkens Story - a time for celebration

Time for a celebration

Yes, The Glenkens Story has been in existence for ten years. We launched with a history 'market place' attended by over 100 people in Dalry in March 2015 and, some 30 events later, we will be marking the anniversary with an afternoon of celebration at the CatStrand on Sunday 23rd March

The keynote lecture

The most spectacular ongoing local history story over the last decade has been the unwrapping, literally, of the ‘Galloway Hoard’ which had been unearthed in a field near Balmaghie Kirk the year before the group was set up. David Bartholomew, one of our most active members and contributors, was with the detectorists who made the discovery. We will start our celebration afternoon with the very latest research on the find when Dr Adrián Maldonado, Galloway Hoard Researcher at the National Museums Scotland, delivers the keynote lecture: “The Galloway Hoard – What’s New and What’s Next”.

Talks, field trips, conferences and making the national news

The Hoard lecture will be followed by a short illustrated review of the last ten years’ highlights presented by Mike Brown

Ted Cowan and the Glenkens Gazette

For a number of years, the late Professor Ted Cowan contributed a regular and very popular local history column in the Glenkens Gazette. Dr Lizanne Henderson will discuss "Writing the Glenkens Story" in recognition of the work and passion that went into these articles, as well as future plans for their wider dissemination.

Music-making and future possibilities

Other contributors will include Jo Miller who curated our “Music-Making in the Glenkens’ exhibition and Michael Ansell who will present a smorgasbord of possible future events, offering the opportunity for anyone interested to become involved in shaping our programme.

Refreshments

… of course, will add some sparkle to the occasion.
