Seasonal wreath making at Carsphairn SWI
President, Melissa Ade welcomed everyone to the meeting and introduced Selina and Lindsay who had come to show members how to make an autumn wreath.
Everyone was amazed and delighted with the vast range of foliage and features they had on display. With that and the additional greenery that individual members had brought, the hall had a lovely aroma and it seemed that the outside had been brought inside. Selina demonstrated how a 10-inch wire ring can be filled with moss which is then secured with green twine, the twine also serves as a hook for hanging. This made the base. Wires were provided to secure the different elements on to the ring.
All then got to work on their individual wreath. The hall had a low concentrated buzz as members chatted quietly while selecting different foliage and features to build their wreath. The finished products were all very different and very pleasing to look at. Everyone had really enjoyed the experience and was happy with their wreath. Members were looking ahead to the festive season and thinking how they could apply their new skills. Jennifer Harvie spoke for everyone when she gave a vote of thanks which was heartily endorsed by all.
Nancy White and Sheila Little then provided very welcome refreshments which were enjoyed by all while the business was conducted. This included plans for the 90th Birthday Party and the Stewartry Spring Show in 2026. Volunteers also gave their names to join the teams for the upcoming Christmas Quiz in Dalbeattie and the Ruralympics in February 2026.
Selina and Lindsay had kindly judged the competitions. The results were as follows:
Pumpkin Soup 1. Melissa Ade 2. Sheila Little 3. Alison Metcalfe.
Crocheted Item 1. Alison Metcalfe 2. Sheila Little.
Flower of the Month 1. Nancy White 2. Sheila Little 3. Melissa Ade.
Melissa thanked Nancy and Sheila for their tasty refreshments. Everyone helped to tidy up in the kitchen and in the hall (a fair bit of sweeping was required).
Members headed for home, each with their wreath and having enjoyed a social evening with lots of learning and laughter.
