‘Making a Meal of It’ at Carsphairn SWI
President, Irene McCreath welcomed everyone to the first meeting after the summer break on Thursday 17th September. She then introduced Linda McTurk who was there to show members how to ‘Make a Meal of It’.

Linda had set up a mobile kitchen at the front of the hall. She then demonstrated how to make Creamy Garlic Chicken, Chilli Bean Casserole and Raspberry Delight. While Linda was cooking, she shared many entertaining and engaging stories about her hospitality journey. Some referred to her earlier days when she was in the classroom, some mentioned different places and occasions when she was demonstrating and some were about the equipment and utensils she still uses. There were many looks of concentration around the hall accompanied by smiles and laughter as members watched the demonstration. Tasting opportunities followed and members were keen to try out the recipes. Dorothy Faulds gave Linda a vote of thanks which was heartily endorsed by everyone.
Betty Peacock and Dorothy Faulds then provided refreshments as everyone caught up and discussed Linda’s demonstration. After the raffle was drawn, the business of the evening was addressed. The Treasurer’s report was shared. The Stewartry Federation Newsletter was discussed and members were asked to provide feedback to inform future editions. Irene gave a report of the summer outing in June which took members to ‘The Mariner’ in Kippford, New Abbey Church and Ewart Library in Dumfries. The day had been very much enjoyed by those who went along. Hospitality was offered everywhere and lots was learned about the East Window in New Abbey church and Carsphairn heritage in the library. Christine Whipp shared her experience of The National Gathering, which had taken place the previous weekend in Dundee. Two members had joined Twynholm SWI for their Open Night Beetle Drive and had enjoyed the evening.
Upcoming events which were discussed and planned for included Stewartry Federation’s ‘Wee Gathering’, Fun Bowling, Carsphairn’s Festive celebration and the Stewartry Federation Show. Project 1917 was also in the spotlight as 2027 will be the 110th Anniversary of the SWI and planning is in progress to celebrate this important milestone. The Travelling book had been returned by Lavinia Morris and has now travelled to Alison Metcalfe.

Irene thanked Betty and Dorothy for providing the very welcome refreshments and this was endorsed by all. Everyone helped to tidy up a wee bit later than usual. Nobody minded and headed home having enjoyed the cooking and catching up.
