Forthcoming Glenkens Story event to focus on ordinary people and families
The next Glenkens Story event will be on Saturday 30th November when we will be welcoming back David Bartholomew, a regular contributor to our programme over the years.
His subject is The Glenkens in Covenanting times – persecution, families and feuds. Following publication of his book 'The Covenanters of the Glenkens’ last year, David has continued to research the subject, focusing on the ordinary people and families involved.
In his talk he will describe how his new research is fleshing out the stories of individuals on both sides of the conflict, and others who were just trying to survive.
“For example one individual who is frequently mentioned”, says David, “is Gavin McClymont. His daughter Mary was one of the two Covenanters killed on Marscalloch moor southwest of Carsphairn. I've discovered from the Kirkcudbright Sheriff Court Deeds that he lived at Knockengorroch. He survived the troubles and went on to be one of the last people to hold the lease of the mill in the now-abandoned village of Polmaddie.”
The talk will be held at CatStrand, New Galloway, at 3 pm on Saturday 30th November. Tickets priced £8 [U26 £4] are available from, https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/catstrand/the-glenkens-story-the-glenkens-in-covenanting-times-persecution-families-and-feuds/e-kbkgrq or by phoning the CatStrand on 01644 420 374.
