Carsphairn SWI summer outing to The Great Tapestry of Scotland

Carsphairn SWI has discussed over recent years, a visit to The Great Tapestry of Scotland in Galashiels. On 17th July, this came to fruition when a minibus of members and friends set off from Dalry at 9am.

The weather was good and anticipation high. For some this was their first visit. We arrived at Galashiels after a journey through beautiful and varied countryside and through lots of interesting towns and villages. Everyone enjoyed some refreshments before heading to the Tapestry.

First we looked at the information which told us about Carsphairn residents who had helped stitch Panel 31 entitled ‘The Rain at Carlisle’. We saw the cross on the Scotland map of contributors representing Carsphairn. One of our group had actually contributed three stitches during a visit to the Tapestry when it was being created, we all wondered which three they were.

Everyone then made their own way around the breathtaking and incredible needlework and history of Scotland on display. It is hard to describe the impact of the Tapestry on people and I imagine it will be different from person to person. It really has to be seen to be appreciated. As folk worked their way round, short conversations were had about different panels and features that stood out.

It was agreed on reflection that one visit is not enough. As we made our way back on the bus, enjoying a different route, we spoke about what we had seen. We celebrated the birthday of one of our members which made the day special too. With impeccable timing we arrived back at Dalry in time to enjoy our tea at the Lochinvar.

It was good to have other members join us for the meal. Everyone headed for home with their own thoughts and reflections on the day. A huge ‘Thank you’ to everyone who contributed to the day whether in planning, funding or taking part.
