Energy Efficiency & Decarbonisation in Glenkens Buildings

Community Action Plan Theme 4 - A Carbon Neutral Community

Two reports examining the potential for energy saving and decarbonisation in community and domestic buildings in the Glenkens were commissioned from Natural Power Consultants (NPC) by the Glenkens Community and Arts Trust (GCAT) in 2023. They give technical recommendations for the most appropriate energy saving measures in a range of buildings.

The reports were made possible through support from the Scottish Government's 'Community Led Vision' fund, administered by D&G Council, plus a community discount offered by NPC, and were facilitated by GCAT's Glenkens Community Spaces Network.

This report investigates two typical domestic building types common in the Glenkens:

  • “Post-war” – a post 1940’s semi-detached bungalow reflective of housing seen throughout the area;

  • “Galloway Cottage” – a pre-1919 1.5-storey mid-terrace dwelling constructed of solid walls which make up the majority of the traditional housing stock throughout Glenkens;

and provides technical data and costings which building owners and occupants can use to increase the energy efficiency of their homes. Many of the general findings can be extrapolated to other housing types, and so are of wider interest to home-owners and landlords.
