Galloway Glens Drax intern Andrew Murdoch with Jan Hogarth and Martin McGhie

Welcome Andrew, the new Galloway Hydro Scheme Intern!

The latest Galloway Glens supported Intern started in post at the beginning of April. Andrew Murdoch secured a six-month Internship working with Drax Group, owners of the Galloway Hydro Scheme. The role will give Andrew an introduction to work in the hydro-electric sector and supporting a range of tasks across the overall Hydro Scheme.

This role is the 14th such position supported through the Galloway Glens Scheme, which is aiming to use National Lottery Heritage Funding to connect employers to their future workforce and encourage young people to consider their working future here in Galloway. A report summarising lessons learned and outcomes form all roles supported will be published shortly.

Andrew will be working as ‘Technical Support Assistant’ and supporting a range of tasks up and down the Galloway Hydro Scheme. After starting the role, Andrew said:

I am really excited to have been given such a great opportunity to work with a company that is working towards a greener future especially in the Galloway area where I have lived my whole life, the Galloway Hydro Scheme has been a positive force in the renewable energy industry historically and I hope to be able to help continue and expand that legacy going forward.

Additionally thank you to Jan and the Galloway Glens Scheme for providing this opportunity and for all the other work they are doing in the region.”

Martin McGhie, Drax’s O+M Manager for the Galloway Hydros, added:

We are all welcoming Andrew onto the team and look forward to working together in coming months. We are delighted to be an example of the wide range of careers you can have right here in Galloway.

Many thanks to everyone that applied for the role. If you’d like to join the team, do keep an eye on www.drax.com for our careers site.”

Jan Hogarth, Galloway Glens Education & Community Engagement Officer, will be keeping in touch with Andrew and providing updates on his progress during the internship. Jan said:

We were all delighted that a local lad secured this unique internship opportunity with Drax, working on the Galloway Hydro Scheme. Andrew is really interested in renewable energy, so this is just the perfect internship for him. By working in this important business administration role, he will build up an understanding of the sector and how it operates day to day while also learning some very valuable skills which will be transferrable for his future career. “
