Inclusive exercises at Carsphairn SWI

Dorothy Faulds (President) welcomed everyone to the Carsphairn Scottish Women’s Institute meeting in Lagwyne Hall on Thursday 18th April 2024. Previous minutes were approved and Nancy White gave a full report on the finances. Further business was discussed including upcoming Stewartry Federation events and a review of the Spring Show which took place in March 2024. Members also discussed possible venues for their Summer Outing with Culzean Castle and Country Park being the favoured option. Christine informed members that acknowledgement is required from each Institute, of the SWI’s move to become a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation. She read out the appropriate statement which was acknowledged by all present.

Sam Rushton demonstrated musical chair exercises at Carsphairn SWI.

Dorothy then introduced Sam Rushton. This is Sam’s second visit to Carsphairn SWI, this time to take members through musical chair exercises. Sam asked everyone to move their chairs in order to have space. Before starting, Sam made it clear that participants should do only what they were comfortable with. She then demonstrated pieces of home gym equipment which consisted of two tins of beans and two pieces of kitchen roll.

All became clear as the class progressed. Sam then went on to lead members through a series of exercises to music, which allowed them to use muscles from head to toe. These included cross over routines which help to stimulate the brain. The beans were put to use as weights and the kitchen roll became a way to do lots of sliding foot, ankle and leg exercises.

Sam’s enthusiasm was infectious and everyone was keen to be involved. This was clear from the looks of concentration around the room. Sam suggested that participants could include a few of these exercises in their daily lives as they have a sit down, perhaps while watching television. Sheila Little gave Sam a vote of thanks which was heartily endorsed by everyone there.
