Walk with New Galloway History Group up New Galloway High Street and take a step into the past. Discover the myriad of shops that made our little town a busy Burgh. 

 Now a sleepy, quiet little place, it can be hard to imagine New Galloway as a once busy, bustling town. Assorted shops, hostelries, cafes and craftsmen meant it was possible to get everything you wanted or needed without having to resort to a car or bus ride to Castle Douglas or Dumfries.

Join us for a walk up the High Street to discover some of the shops that lay behind so many of the doors. From fishing rods and bicycles, to a shop devoted to sweets, from knitting wool or antiques to ladies makeup – there was very little you couldn’t buy. And if it wasn’t there, at least one shop keeper could be guaranteed to find it for you!
