Cultural Glenkens: Mosstales Book Launch

Some places hold more than they let on.

Mosstales book launch

Mossdale is a small village in Galloway with a loch, a wood, a hall and a welcoming and vibrant community. MossTales is a collection of linked stories set there, and in the ground beneath it. The stories move through time. A hoard found and lost again. A stranger who gives a false name. A railway halt that may never have been built. A fire tended three thousand years ago by two people whose names nobody kept. Each story stands alone. Together they make one place, seen from many centuries.

Paul Clarke lives in Mossdale, growing food and restoring woodland. He has written several books on ecology and education. This is his latest and it has drifted into fiction.

The stories draw on real ground — kirkyards, drove roads, plantation edges, the peat itself. Readers who know this landscape will recognise it. Readers who don't will still find their way in.

Paul reads some selected pieces from the collection and talks about how the stories came out of the ground they are set in. There will be time for questions, and copies to buy and sign afterwards.
