A fundraiser organised by Galloway Friends of MAP - Medical Aid for Palestinians.
This evening event offers the people of Galloway a special treat: an insight into the rich world of Palestinian culture and arts with an opportunity to hear Palestinian music, singing, poetry and prose. These artists continue to share their culture and their struggle for freedom and to demonstrate their fortitude, which always has to be seen against a backdrop of the suffering of the Palestinian people.
Aziz Abushark is a talented young musician, born in Gaza but living in Dublin since 2016. He has been playing the qanun, a Middle Eastern stringed instrument, for 14 years. He trained at the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music in Gaza and has won competitions in several countries.
Amira Al Shanti is a young Palestinian composer, singer and performer. She was brought up in Scotland and now lives in Fife. She was shortlisted for the Kavya New Writers Prize in 2023. She has recently written a musical called Harvest, showcasing how traditions prevail despite the ongoing challenges of occupation and apartheid. Amira and her husband Gordon Robertson will bring their combined musical talent to the stage at CatStrand.
Ghazi Hussein is a lecturer, author, poet and award winning playwright. Born in Syria to an exiled Palestinian family, Ghazi was first imprisoned at the age of 14 but never charged. Repeatedly imprisoned and tortured over 20 years Ghazi says that writing poetry saved his sanity.
Profits from the evening will be donated to Medical Aid for Palestinians. Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) is a UK based charity that works for the health and dignity of Palestinians living under occupation and as refugees. They provide immediate medical aid to those in great need, while also developing local capacity and skills to ensure the long-term development of the Palestinian healthcare system.
Recommended for 16+. The material presented by the artists may refer to the experiences of Palestinians living through the assault on Gaza. Some audience members may find this distressing.
