The Smithy now licensed to serve alcohol

The Smithy, cosy corner

After a period of 30 years as an unlicensed premises you can now enjoy a glass of wine or beer at The Smithy, New Galloway.

Margaret from The Smithy said:

“Customers regularly asked us for wine or beer to go with their meals so it was always in the back of our minds to look into an alcohol licence.

We attended Connecting in Communities consultation and feedback sessions at the end of 2022 and beginning of 2023 and one of the major feedback items from the community was the lack of somewhere to get a social drink, particularly in New Galloway.

This gave us the impetus to explore this opportunity further and we hope that it adds to customers’ enjoyment of a visit to The Smithy”

A decision was made to trial the sale of alcohol, so Andrew from The Smithy sat the exam needed to apply for a personal licence and that was then approved by Dumfries and Galloway Licensing Board. Alcohol will be sold under an occasional licence.

Andrew added:

“Studying for and sitting an exam was something I haven’t done for a long time, but thankfully I managed to pass and get the licence.

Selling alcoholic drinks is something new for us that we will trial over the next few months to see if it is a success. There will be a selection of wines, beers and fizz that we will regularly review depending on customer feedback”

So if you enjoy a glass of red or white wine with your pizza or pasta, The Smithy is open from 5pm to 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Or how about a beer with your Sunday lunch from 12 noon until 5pm.
