The Time Travelling Ecologist

Old Map - Boreland

In January 2023 Galloway Glens supported a joint project with the Dumfriesshire Archival mapping Project and the National Library of Scotland to georeferenced a set of historical maps of the Earlstoun and Balmaclellan. In addition the land-use on the maps has been vectorised enabling the system to be interrogated in multiple layers.

For instance 200 year old meadows can now be seen over satellite or Lidar images etc. etc. Understanding the land use 200 years ago means that we can catch glimpses of an ecological baseline from that era. From this a number of short essays have been created looking at specific things like peat, plant life or moths etc. Some of the authors will discuss their findings, describe what might have been there, what was the flora and fauna abundance, how have farming practices changed and what clues might be used to guide the future of our landscape.

We will pick 4 of these essays and present them to you in our final ever hybrid event.

There’s seating for about 50 in the Dalry Town Hall and the opportunity of an infinite online attendance!
